Friday 13th March
Peponi Beach Resort, Tanzania:
Had a nice lazy start to the day & woke up to look out at the sea. It was a beautiful & a very welcome sight.
Dusty is parked in the shade so having a well deserved day off too.
Breakfast was buffet style; fruit, tea & toast. We’ve decided we’re having a day off here, right on the beach, with a gentle sea breeze blowing. However, it’s time to do some laundry and as in most places on this trip, when you put laundry in, it is hand washed. I’ve noticed it’s not always done very well so I decided I’d wash my own & John said he’d do his own as well. We have everything we need, including washing powder for hand washing, even clothes pegs as well.

The
washing facility was by the camp site so we set to work. And, work it
was. It took me nearly two hours to do all my hand washing as I
had accumulated a lot since the last service wash. We had a great area
for hanging them all out to dry as well. I actually had 3 showers during
the process, it was so hot. The final one was to rinse my bath towel
and it was easier to do that in the shower. Pleased with all my hard
work, it’s time for lunch and a beer, but first a 1.5 litre bottle of
water, to replace the lost fluids.
The rest of the day was spent relaxing. I met two guys from London
who’d just rode in on their BMW F800GS motorbikes (yes, I know there’s
a lot of detail there but I like that particular model!). They left London just after Christmas and were on their way to Cape Town. The first mishap they had was both bikes blowing their shock absorbers on the corrugated section from Ethiopia to Kenya. They (bikes too) got a lift on a truck for the 300 kms or so to Nairobi,
to get the shocks replaced. One of them had fallen off his bike a few
times, the last time being in deep mud. His bike was showing some wear
& tear, bent crash bars, broken foot pedal but they were very
enthusiastic about the journey so far. Sounds very much like Charlie
Boorman & Ewen McGregor in "The Long Way Down" TV series that
followed their adventure from John O'Groats in Scotland to Cape Town.
Later, I lazed on the hammock, reading ‘The Gate House’ a book by Nelson Demille.
Later
still, washing was brought in off the line, some not quite dry, so hung
on a line at my own Banda. It would be dry in the morning. Dinner was
served at 7.30 & we met up with Donald & Dennis, the two
bikers from London, and chatted for a couple of hours. Back to the Banda, repacked with some more order to my bags & off to bed.
