Sunday 15th March..........Tiwi Beach, Kenya
Had
a great sleep under the mosquito net. Woke up and showered
for breakfast. The water was cold so I woke up quickly! Then it wouldn’t
drain out of the shower tray so that sped things up too. The toilet
seat was there, but only held on at one side so it was sitting at an
unusual angle. The towel was surely made of sandpaper, it was so rough. I
definitely exfoliated with that one.
I was pleased to see that John
hadn’t been robbed in the night due to his door lock being broken. We
went for breakfast and had their full house: eggs, bacon, sausage etc. I
ate the egg and pretty much left everything else, having tasted it. Had
a chat with the manager and told him about the various problems. We
decided to check out & in the worst case scenario, we could
always come back here later.
We
left after breakfast and within 10 minutes had found the most lovely
boutique hotel, a bit further along Tiwi beach, called Sheshe Baharini.
We got the best two deluxe rooms, practically on the beach, and having
struck a deal with Tania, the director, we checked in for two nights.

It was also
great to hear that it was a full board rate so within two hours, we
were having lunch on the beach. We had planned to move on by Monday but
now we’ve made it Tuesday. I would also like to spend the 17th, St. Patricks day, on the coast, probably near Malindi, 110 kms north of here. That means we’ll head towards Nairobi
on Wednesday & then make Nanyuki on Thursday, the date I set
many months ago. I think we have almost 1000 kms to cover in those last
two days, but with little choice of places to stay in between, we don’t
have a lot of choice. I do recall Jim & Lori offering their
helicopter if things go wrong, so perhaps we could call on them for an
airlift to Nanyuki.
Back to today: After lunch, the manager invited us to join him for a walk at 3.30 to the Congo River.

This is where it runs into the Indian Ocean.
It was just a 20 minute walk from here, along the beach. It’s quite
something to watch this freshwater river at the end of its long journey,
run into the salty Indian Ocean.
After that, John & I went for a drive to Diani Beach, to look for an internet café. The two that were there were both closed so we’ll hopefully update the blog tomorrow, in Mombasa itself.
We
were invited to the manager’s cocktail party at 7pm and that was
lovely. At 8.15 we went for dinner and that was buffet style, but very
freshly cooked. It was very tasty and we adjourned to our rooms at about
10pm.
