Mozambique: Chimoio to Vilanculos

Friday 3rd July. Mozambique. Chimoio to Vilanculo. Mozambique:

After queuing for 3 hours, we finally got fuel. Trouble is that it’s now 1pm & Vilanculos is 470 kms south of us. Can we make it before sunset? No way, given that happens in 4 hours time. Nonetheless, we set off for Vilanculos with John & I splitting the journey. John had the most amazing tar road, smooth as anything. I took over, crossed a major river about half an hour later and suddenly hit the road from hell.

It went from being a quiet road to rush hour traffic in places & the road was barely wide enough to carry two vehicles in opposite directions. The potholes were nasty so it was  slow going for  periods, especially in the dark. We arrived in Vilanculos about 8pm and with the help of Mel, a wonderful lady who manages the Casa Rex guesthouse in town, found ourselves a house right on the beach. It is called Casa Cabana. Overall, we achieved a very good time from Chimoio.  We initially went to Casa Rex to enquire about accommodation. The setting is to die for,and very luxurious, but it was way outside our price range.           http://www.casa-rex.com/

Mel was so kind to us. We'll definitely be back for dinner and drinks though.
In the end though, we really did finish up in a place just as stunning, and way more suited to us.

Casa Cabana: Beautifully laid out &  furnished, it is owned by Robert from Johannesburg who happened to be visiting.

We agreed on the price & we each had our luxury rooms with stunning terrace looking out over the ocean.

We had dinner at a small beachside restaurant right next door and retired to bed about 1130pm, still unsure what sort of view awaited us in daylight.
