South Africa: Calvinia to Olifantshoek

                               Tuesday 17th February
Went to see the famous Augrabies falls in the national park. Really worth a visit and very noisy indeed. This picture really doesn't do it justice, also, it has not rained for some time so it is a little bit limp!

From Dust and Diesel

Apparently the name Augrabies is the Sans bushmans name for big noise and that is how the town got it's name. The weather is warming up considerably by 10am and the temperature today was 38c. February can get temperatures as high as 47c we were told. The other industry here is raisins so they grow and dry a lot of grapes for that. Needless to say, we couldn't leave without purchasing some and they make a nice driving snack.
1.5 hours of pleasant driving took us to Upington. It is a busy town and is situated on the banks of the Orange river (one of the largest rivers in South Africa). One of the first signs we saw as we entered town was Land Rover. Thankfully we have no need for anything and we hope it stays that way.
We are hoping to drive to Olifantshoek later and find accomodation for tonight. This will get us within a couple of hours of McCarthy's Rest Border Crossing and with luck, we can be through into Botswana early tomorrow, Wednesday 18th Jan. Firstly though, a few last minute purchases before we leave "The Land of the Plenty" as the rest of Africa seems to call SA.
We drove 160 kms to Olifantshoek, departing Upington at 6pm. We arrived in the dark, breaking a rule of never driving at night. However, that rule is for the rest of Africa due to bad roads and wild animals roaming loose so we'll be trying hard to observe that from Botswana onwards. Had a meal waiting for us at the lodge and we were a meal waiting for the mossies too. Early night was called for and some planning for the next day ahead.
